What to Expect
Each member of the Sunshine Coast Osteopathy team is here to make your overall experience a great one.
Nadine, Diane, and Margie make up our reception team and one of them will gladly make an appointment for you with your practitioner of choice, on your preferred day and time and in the most convenient of our two locations.
If you prefer, you can use our online booking function by clicking below.
Your first appointment
Your first appointment is a consultation with your Osteopath, which generally runs for 45-60 minutes.
During this time, your Osteopath will thoroughly review your clinical history, discuss your symptoms, carry out an assessment, diagnose the problem and manage all components of your complaint.
It’s important to note, there are many factors that can influence your symptoms, so they all need to be considered. Your Osteopath may therefore ask other questions about your current and your past health history.
Following this, any treatment required will be clearly outlined for you and once your consent is received, treatment can commence. If you have any questions or concerns about the treatment, your recovery or anything related to your condition, please feel free to raise it during this consultation or at any time following it.
Upon completion of this appointment, your Osteopath will advise if a follow up appointment is needed. This will be dependent on the type and severity of your complaint. All follow up appointments run for 30 minutes and we recommend you continue with the same practitioner so consistent care and treatment can occur.
What’s involved with the initial assessment of your condition?
The initial assessment is critical to diagnosing your condition and developing the most suitable treatment plan to get you healthy in the least possible time. There are five key things our Sunshine Coast Osteopaths will do during this assessment.
- Review your symptoms and medical background to create your case history
- Study how your body functions as you carry out normal movements like sitting, standing, and laying down
- Observe your posture
- Examine your spine and shoulders and the symmetry of your pelvis to determined misalignment
- Carry out an external physical exam to see which areas of your body are healthy or in pain
What do I need to bring to my appointment?
- Please bring any relevant reports such as X rays, MRI’s, or CT scans
- Your Doctors referral if you have one (Please note, consultations do not require a referral)
- Any Chronic Disease Management Plan, DVA or Third-Party Insurance
- Anything related to your health or condition that you think may be useful
- We recommend wearing comfortable, loose fitting clothes
You will be advised of all this prior to your appointment, but please don’t hesitate to contact the clinic with any questions you have prior to your appointment.
What should you expect from treatment?
Once the assessment is complete and treatment begins, depending on your condition, most of the time will be spent lying down or sitting on the treatment table.
When treating children and babies, we always ask the parent or guardian to come into the treatment room as a comfort to them, and/or we may need your assistance during the treatment.
Almost all our treatments use a hands-on approach such as massaging, stretching and joint manipulation.
In cases where your condition is painful, unfortunately treatment can also be painful. We aim to keep you as comfortable as possible and will ask you to always communicate with us about your pain threshold and the pressure being applied.
You may also experience some mild tenderness post treatment, similar to that experienced with exercising but it should disperse within a few days. If it doesn’t or it gets worse, please make sure you give us a call.
If during the assessment and/or treatment your Osteopath discovers something similar to a slipped disc or another condition that’s deemed serious, we’ll recommend the next best steps and refer to you the appropriate specialist.
What happens following your appointment?
Your Osteopath will provide you with some take home advice and exercises that will help to strengthen the affected area/s and prevent reoccurrence. This may include:
- Lifestyle and/or dietary modifications
- Workplace ergonomic recommendations
- Stretching exercises
- Lifting techniques
- Ways to better your posture
- Breathing techniques
- Ways to reduce stress
