Osteopathy philosophy is based
on the holistic treatment and
healing of your body.
If one or more parts of the musculoskeletal system is injured or misaligned, this will impact other systems including the nervous, circulatory, and lymphatic systems. By treating your entire body and ensuring it’s functioning at an optimal level, it has the capacity to self-repair, meaning less injuries, ongoing or otherwise.
With a focus on your musculoskeletal framework, Osteopathy is a natural, non-invasive, manual therapy that uses an all-inclusive approach to accurately diagnose your injury or pain and treat your entire body, rather than just the symptomatic area/s, to heal it.
Often, the site of your injury or pain stems from elsewhere in the body, an area that isn’t functioning correctly or is in trauma.
Because this part of your body is suffering, it relies on other areas to support it. Over time, however, this body part has been under stress, it’s overworked, and it’s become fragile, presenting as pain or an injury. For example, if your spine is not moving optimally, hip pain, neck pain, lower back pain or even headaches can present as these areas overcompensate for this issue. Similarly, if you injured your left knee and are favouring your right leg, the stress on other areas of your body due to the imbalance in your weight distribution can lead to pain in your right leg or back pain.
Osteopathy recognises the crucial link between the structure of the body (musculoskeletal system) and the way it functions, and therefore, by sourcing the root cause of your pain, we can confidently cure it and override any misalignment leaving your body in its most natural, self-healing state.
Osteopathy focuses on how your spine, joints, muscles, ligaments, and connective tissue function, as well as your nervous, circulatory and lymphatic systems as they are all interconnected. By manipulating and strengthening these areas, we can improve your overall health and well-being.
The History of Osteopathy
People have been turning to Osteopathic treatment for their injuries and musculoskeletal pain for centuries.
Reliance on surgical methods and medication to heal or restore the body during that era wasn’t an effective way to manage some conditions. Over time, Dr Still practiced and fine-tuned his hands on, holistic approach to treatment. He worked on a variety of people with varying conditions including dysentery, sciatica, and arthritis and soon, his reputation preceded him, with people flocking from all over the USA to see him. He was in such high demand that accommodation and transport options were created or altered to assist the barrage of people seeking out treatment.
In 1892, Dr Still welcomed the very first intake of Osteopathic students at the American School of Osteopathy, an accredited institution now known as Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine. Back then, the course ran for two years and upon completion, students were awarded the title of Doctor of Osteopathy, a title that is still achieved today.
Post this, word of the profession and the treatment quickly spread. More universities and colleges began offering the qualification and new clinics were established to meet the growing demand.
Here in Australia, it was the year of 1955 when Australian Osteopathic Association took shape, which is now Osteopathy Australia, the peak representing body for the country.
Today, Osteopathy is seen as one of the fastest growing allied health professions in Australia, with over 75,000 Australian’s regularly visiting an Osteopath across 2016 – 2018 (1). Osteopathy is also established in over 50 countries across the globe.
