Remedial Vs Swedish Massage
by Nichole Stanford
I have had a lot of questions regarding the difference between the techniques I am qualified to perform. Remedial massage and Swedish massage are both forms of therapeutic massage, but they have different purposes and techniques. Both can be beneficial depending on your needs:
Swedish Massage is a gentle form of massage that aims to promote relaxation and relieve muscles tension. The techniques involve long strokes, kneading, deep circular movements, and passive joint movements. It’s more suitable for people looking for a relaxing experience and can help with muscle tightness from daily activities.
Remedial Massage is more targeted and is used to treat specific issues or injuries. It also employs a variety of techniques, including deep tissue massage, trigger point therapy, and stretching protocols. Remedial massage is often used by athletes or individuals with pain conditions to address deeper muscle layers and improve mobility. Due to the nature of Remedial massage being treatment oriented, it is eligible for Health Fund rebates.
Additionally, I (Nichole) offer Trigger point and Myofascial Release. Although it is also a type of treatment, it is not classified as massage, but as bodywork. The reason for this is that the session is not at all like a massage. The patient stays clothed (typically in shorts and a tank top), very little to no oil or massage balm is used, and the technique is completely different from massage. I use myofascial spreading, active movement, and trigger point techniques. The goal is to break fascial patterns in the body that impede movement and cause pain, and it is very deep and intense work.
If you have any other questions about the distinction between the massage and bodywork modalities I employ please call me at the clinic on 07 5451 1599. I’ve also recently started my own Facebook page, which has a direct link to online booking.
