Get to know Dr Daniel Garner ( Osteopath)

  • Where did you study, and what did you do your Masters degree on?

I studied at the European school of Osteopathy in Kent, England – this school is known to teach a very diverse curriculum, encompassing all components of Osteopathy, some of which are left out at other schools. I did my Masters thesis on, contrary to popular belief ‘Why we shouldn’t ice an area after an injury’

  • What inspired you to get into Osteopathy?

I was actually studying sport and exercise science and met some student Osteopaths, after having conversations with them about how they understood the body to function more as a whole system rather than just individual parts I really got intrigued.

  • What style of treatment do you use?

I wouldn’t say I exclusively use one style of treatment, having worked and studied in the UK, Canada, America and here in Australia I’ve picked up many different styles and apply them as needed. Most commonly I’ll combine some hands on treatment, hands off rehabilitation movement strategy and education on the current available research and management.

  • What type of injuries do you like to treat?

As an Osteopath sometimes the specific orthopaedic injury itself is less important, the person, the context and the broader perspective to me is of much greater interest. For example, mechanically speaking, try to think about a tennis player with an orthopaedic diagnosis of  ‘tennis elbow’ who presents with limited hip and spine mobility. One strategy of the body may be to overuse the elbow and wrist to create power rather than channelling through the kinetic chain from foot/hip/spine up to racket. So if we only treat the injury (elbow) and never taught the hips, spine and shoulder to work together we just keep going round in circles. The current research in the pain sciences suggests that our brains and our pain is much more complicated than tissue injury alone but a summation multiple inputs to our brains.
